Pick Your Plan

People are now spending more time on their cell phones than their land line phones than ever before. With the convenience and availability of cell phones, more and more people are using them as their main choice of communication. And discarding their land line phones altogether. Which makes sense. Why pay for two bills when you can do so much on a cell phone you can't do on a land-line?

Tips on choosing a cell phone plan

  • Look for features that most suit your needs- If you do a huge amount of texting, then you should look for a cell phone plan that has a reasonably good texting feature that includes texting photos and other media.Preferably something with an unlimited texting plan. You want your phone plan to work for you, not against you. Make a list of features you are looking for, and shop around for what you want. Don't be intimidated by sellers trying to sign you to their latest package if it doesn't fit into your lifestyle.
  • Find a service that aims at getting the most out of your plan- You want a service plan that has the best reception in your home calling area. And the ability to receive and make long distance calls. You don't want to be talking and have your important calls dropped every time you are on the phone. Be sure to ask about roaming fees, how far you can travel outside your home calling area before your in roaming. You don't want to be surprised with huge roaming charges on your next cell phone bill. Believe me it happens and it can be a real headache to have the charges removed.
  • Find a cell phone that works for you. Look for simplicity- You want something that is simple to use. Will it fit in your pocket or your purse? Does it have a bunch of gadgets on it that you have to figure out? Simplicity is an excellent option, unless you are willing and able to figure out all the gadgetry on a more complicated cell phone. You should be able to use your phone easily and conveniently. Ask a lot of questions when choosing what you want and need in a phone. Test the cell phone out before buying it. If it is to hard to use, keep looking for something that you like and is easy to use. Don't take something home you are not throughly satisfied with, if you decide to return the phone, you more than likely will be charged a restocking fee that can range from $25-75 dollars per phone. So select wisely and don't be intimidated to pick something you are not comfortable with. Agents love to sell that lovely smart phone you may never end up using, so make sure you are going to use the features before purchasing it.
  • Find a cell phone package that works with you, not against you- Here you will want to go with what works best for you. Do you talk mostly at night? If so you may want a package with night time minutes, if you text a great deal, then a package with texting options is something you should look for. Seek out the packages that best suit your needs. Not just the plans they have to offer. Make a list of the features you would like in your package. And find something close to that. If you don't text, then you don't want a texting package. You have to live with the contract for a year or two, so be sure you are happy before leaving the store.

Things You Should Know

  • Basic Monthly Fee- This is the fixed rate you will pay every month for your cell phone bill.
Not included are taxes and other fees.
  • Air-time Charges- This is what you pay spent talking on the cell phone. This is what keeps your cell phone activated.
  • Cancellation Charge- This is what you pay if you cancel your contract. The fees for cancellation range from $100-$350 dollars per phone line. So be sure you want the contract, if you have a family plan that is $100-$300 per line. So choose wisely.
  • Roaming Charges- Calls made outside your home calling area while traveling.
  • Peak- These are usually Weekdays when a user pays the maximum rate for cell phone calls. Depending on your plan you get so many minutes per month. After that you are charged a fee for any overages.
  • Long-distance- Calls made outside your home calling area.
  • Off-Peak- Usually weekends and week nights after 7:00 pm. or 9:00 pm. Many cell phone plans include Off Peak hours as free depending on the plan you choose.

If you get the right cell phone package, the right cell phone for your needs and good service you may not need a land line phone at all. Unless you really need both. As some families do. But if not, paying an extra phone bill every month could be burdensome. With all the latest devices out there now, you should be able to find one that is the perfect fit just for you. For example I have a family plan with 4 phones, 1400 shared minutes, 10 friends and family (free numbers) unlimited texting and so far have no overages and pay well under 200.00 dollars a month. Happy cell phone plan shopping.
