Decorate Your Small Apartment For Christmas

If you live in a small apartment or house than you know cutting down a beautiful big tree for Christmas is not ideal for your small living space. But you don't have to let that stop you from making your apartment a quaint treasure for the holiday season.

If you don't have room for a life sized tree there are other solutions just right for your small living space. You could choose an artificial table tree, or something small that can be placed in such a way it won't take up a lot of space.

Most apartment complexes will not let you have a real tree, so an artificial tree is one way to go. Walmart, Target, Kmart, MeijerĀ and other name brand stores carry a variety of sizes and shapes to choose from. They also carry trees that have lights already placed on them. All you have to do is add your favorite decorations.

Decorate With What You Have

More decorating ideas include placing white lights around windows or sliding glass doors. White lighting gives off a warm and cozy feeling as opposed to brightly colored lights. But choose what you prefer. Putting lights around a mirror also reflects a soft happy feeling at Christmas time. Wrap lights around a floor lamp, or other shelving in your apartment. Using white strings of lights has a soft elegant mood.

Bookshelves are another way to add a holiday feeling. Wrap some colored garland around the bookshelf to add a pretty hue. Garland comes in a variety of colors, like silver, gold, blue and red. Pick your favorite and go with it. You may also add some holiday stockings since most small apartments have no such thing as a mantle.

If you have an outside porch or balcony it is an ideal place to add a couple strings of lighting. With some red ribbons and a wreath. Or if you have a bit of room you could put a small artificial tree or other decorations in this area as well. At night there is nothing like looking at a well lit Christmas scene on you're outside living area.

Temporarily replacing the photos on the wall with a Christmas tone is also one way to bring the holiday spirit into your small apartment. I have a very large bulletin board that I decorate each season with that particular theme. At Christmastime I put photos or art from family, and a string of white lights around it to accent the items on the board. Beautiful.

Simple Yet Elegant

Accent your kitchen with decorative hand towels, and dishcloths. Holiday pot holders and some scented candles, cinnamon, pine, and apple are perfect scents. This will bring a sweet smelling holiday ambiance to your kitchen.

The idea is to add small touches here and there. You can't go all out because of space, but you don't have to nix decorating for Christmas just because you live in a small apartment or house. So get out those holiday decorations and get busy decorating.

Hi Moonlake-All excellent ideas for your small apartment...you only have so many places to put anything.

toosmallhouse-like Moonlake get super small tree and lights with some red bows will brighten up for the Christmas spirit. Tiny gift packages in place of knick knacks to add some color and ambiance. They don't have to be real gifts, just small wrapped boxes. Sometimes less is more. But I feel lights anywhere you can hang them with red or green bows will help. I am sorry the chief is anti Christmas. I am going all out this year, as my mom is sick and I want her to LOVE everything she possibly can about Christmas and her family. So do whatever small decorating you can. Lights are the key if you can't have a tree.

Very good ideas. We live in a small house and have had to cut down on the size of our tree. We also decorate outside on the deck and add lights on the top of the cabinets in our kitchen.

Family is most important I agree, and that includes friends. Christmas without family or a friend or two can be pretty lonely for some. I tend to decorate simply and to the point. With the small space I don't want to over doit, but want it to look inviting for those that drop by.

I love the word simple yet elegant. In a small apartment maybe the most important decoration is a cute and attractive Christmas tree, 3-6 gifts beside the tree will surely looks wonderful. For me the spirit of Christmas is not on the decoration but it is on the priceless bonding of the family. I'm so excited for this tears Christmas.

Awww Brent I am sorry. I know I have had cats that have climbed into my trees and tried to eat icicles. So I always go with lights, and decorations they can't reach. Like hanging decorative balls in the opening of the kitchen/dining area. Lights around entryways and of course I do the balcony with lights and a tree of some sort. Kitty's sure love Christmas decorations don't they?

I wish my cat would stop eating all the Christmas decorations! So until we figure out a solution to that, minimal decorations for us... :(

Thank you Seakay, it is my mom's balcony. She lives in the apartment next to me. She always does something nice, one year she found a small tree (real) and put it on the balcony. It was beautiful. The best thing about Christmas is the lights :) Doing just the walkway can be enough. It is easy to get roped into doing more more more when you live in a house. I live in a back apt so I always put up white lights so it is nice and bright.

Love the "balcony"! I have a relatively large house and am not looking forward to decorating it! May just do the walkway this year.

Great ideas and thanks for sharing!

Hi blogggerone- No I live in Detroit MI, I have a fairly small apartment, but not as small as some of the places in NYC, or even dorm style apartments that I have lived in as well. You have a decorating mecca, thats alot of decorating.

Do you live in a small space? Do you live in a big city? I am always amazed by people living in places like NYC. 5 Million people take the subway everyday! Yikes! I live on 12 acres of woods in the country.

Pinkchic18-thank you :) I appreciate your comment.

rgarnett-LOL! I used to worry about my cats crawling up the middle, but now the older one just swipes it off the table on a whim.

Deborah-Thank you, and your welcome :)

I love this! I have a balcony and a bookshelf. The only thing I am worried about is putting up my little tree, which is a six foot fake tree and not having my dog eat it! :P
